Full Description

Our client, a local authority based in Surrey, is seeking an experienced Housing Officer to join their Private Sector Housing team on a proactive and reactive basis. Working under the supervision of the Senior Property Standards and Empty Homes Officer, you will play a key role in improving housing standards across all tenures and helping to reduce the number of empty properties across the borough. This is an excellent opportunity for a driven housing professional to make a genuine impact within a busy and supportive local authority team.

In this role, you will investigate and resolve complaints relating to poor housing conditions, carry out proactive and programmed inspections of residential properties, and use the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS) to assess disrepair in line with council policies and procedures. Where necessary, you will prepare recommendations for enforcement action to ensure compliance with relevant legislation. The role also involves the inspection, licensing, and enforcement of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and mobile home/caravan sites, working closely with and under the guidance of the Senior Housing Standards Officer. You will also be responsible for maintaining the team's computerised records systems, ensuring accurate and up-to-date case information at all times.

To be considered for this role, candidates must hold HHSRS certification and have a minimum of 2 years' experience working within property standards, environmental health, or a similar housing enforcement discipline. Strong knowledge of housing legislation, excellent communication skills, and confidence carrying out site visits and enforcement duties are essential.

This is a full-time position offering hybrid working, with a requirement to be office-based for the first week of employment. Following this initial period, the role will move to a hybrid pattern of a minimum of 3 days per week in the office or conducting property visits, and up to 2 days working from home.

If you are an experienced Housing Officer looking to take the next step in your career within a well-regarded Surrey local authority, we would love to hear from you. Please apply today or get in touch for a confidential discussion about the role.
