Our local authority client in North London is seeking an experienced Environmental Health Housing Manager to join their Residential Environmental Health Team on an interim basis. This role requires office attendance 3–4 days per week, with additional travel across the borough as required. The successful candidate will manage a small reactive complaints team and work closely with fellow Environmental Health Managers and the Service Manager to deliver an effective and high-quality Private Rented Sector (PRS) service.
The postholder will lead on regulation and enforcement activity within the PRS, overseeing inspections, investigations, case allocation, and enforcement action where necessary. Acting as a subject matter expert in housing and environmental health legislation, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise on matters relating to the Housing Act 2004, Renters’ Rights Act 2025, and associated legislation, while also managing complex cases, prosecutions, appeals, FOIs, SARs, and supporting the implementation of new licensing schemes and service processes.
Additional responsibilities include managing and supporting a team of officers through supervision, performance management, joint inspections, and regular 1-to-1 meetings. The role will also involve contributing to policy and procedure development, maintaining accurate public-facing information, producing reports and performance data through specialist IT systems, and deputising for the Service Manager when required.
Candidates must hold a recognised Environmental Health qualification together with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System qualification, and possess substantial experience within private sector housing enforcement and team management. Strong technical knowledge of housing legislation, experience attending court and tribunal proceedings, excellent communication and organisational skills, and a proactive, solution-focused management style are essential. This contract is initially offered for 3 months, with a strong likelihood of extension, and offers a daily rate of £440 per day.
