A regeneration contract work project for Victoria Park has secured funding, which will allow for an extensive refurbishment of the historic area.
Tower Hamlets Council, Big Lottery Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund have secured £12 million to regenerate the space ahead of the 2012 Olympic Games, with improvement work having already commenced in October 2010.
Among the work that will be conducted is the creation of a new wheelpark for skaters and bikers and the construction of new bridges, while both the west and east lakes will be drained and de-silted.
The Old English Gardens and Burdett Coutts Fountain will both be restored, while an eastern hub building will be created to house a cafe, community room and park manager's office.
This represents the single largest investment in the park since it was created back in the 1840s.
Victoria Park was originally opened to address the lack of green spaces in the east end of London and has been managed solely by Tower Hamlets Council since 1994.
