People with jobs in town planning could be required in Newcastle if the government gives the go-ahead to a regeneration project in the area.
Plans to build a research and business facility where the former Tyne brewery used to be on Tyneside need to be approved by government ministers, the Journal Live reported.
The Science Central building has already secured financing for the regeneration job, but the Department for Businesses has told town planning officers to freeze all projects for the foreseeable future.
A statement released by Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University said: "The site of Newcastle Science Central is an important part of the Science City project. Any decisions on One North East's contribution to the site must be considered by government."
The two bodies added they will work with the government "to ensure [the] plan is delivered".
This comes after deputy prime minister Nick Clegg announced earlier this week that the government is committed to regeneration projects in areas such as Sheffield, Leeds and Newcastle.
He added that the coalition will give local authorities freedom to borrow money in order to develop their town centres.
