People with
jobs in trading standards in Accrington have announced the launch of a new scheme to tackle problems associated with underage drinking.
According to This is Lancashire, shopkeepers will be given special mobile phone numbers to contact police about attempted alcohol purchases by youngsters.
Joining forces with Lancashire Constabulary, trading standards officials from Lancashire County Council will conduct targeted police patrols in areas well known for underage consumption.
Parents will also be warned of the potential consequences associated with purchasing alcohol for youngsters by posters and leaflets posted through letterboxes.
Paul Noone, head of trading standards at the council, said: "Early alcohol initiation affects children's health in later life and can also result in crime which impacts on local communities."
Last year, officials from Lancashire County Council warned residents to be wary of door-to-door scammers offering counterfeit electricity prepayment cards.
Residents had been advised to ignore offers from house callers who had used cloned cards to illegally top up credit.
