Trading standards officers warn against rogue charity clothing collectors

Trading standards officers warn against rogue charity clothing collectors
There could be a rise in the number of people with jobs in trading standards who have to deal with scam charity clothing collectors.

Earlier this week, the Charity Commission revealed that there has been a growth in the number of businesses pretending to be charities in order to be given belongings.

It noted that private companies even use the name, logo or registration number of a real charity to make it harder for people to determine whether it is a genuine organisation or not.

A spokesperson from the Charity Commission gave advice on what people should look out for, adding that they can check with the organisation or their local authority if they are unsure.

However, it was added that "most collections for charities are genuine and provide them with an important source of income".

Therefore, the organisation stated that "people should not be discouraged from donating to collections".

Last month, residents in East and West Sussex alerted people with trading standards jobs in the area about a number of con artists posing as charities, The Argus reported.
