An investigation by officers with jobs in trading standards into doorstep and telephone salesmen has been welcomed by a comparison site.
Earlier this week, Confused.com's head of utilities Gareth Kloet said that it is "unacceptable" that energy companies mislead customers by being dishonest about prices.
Confused.com recently revealed that households could save up to £150 by not taking out deals offered by door-to-door salesmen, highlighting that it is the elderly and vulnerable that are most susceptive to their sales techniques.
Mr Kloet said: "There is no reason why door-to-door salesmen can't show people online deals and even help households switch to them."
He hopes the Ofgem investigation will "mark the end of customers being overcharged and missold".
Last week, Stoke-on-Trent announced it will set up No Cold Calling Zones so that doorstep salesmen are not allowed to operate in certain areas where older residents live.
Officers with jobs in trading standards will work with the police to protect the public from traders.
