Trading standards cuts 'could endanger public safety'
People with jobs in trading standards have hit back at government plans to cut employment opportunities in the sector.

Ron Gainsford, chief executive of the Trading Standards Institute (TSI), criticised the decision to reduce funding from £247 million to £140 million in the next four years.

In an interview with the Independent, Mr Gainsford claimed that Britain's reputation will be put in jeopardy following the cuts due to inevitable ticket and merchandise scams at the 2012 London Olympics.

The current economic climate has also put families in danger of falling victim to various acts of fraud including property theft, counterfeiting and piracy.

"These are massive cuts; the service is losing huge amounts of funding. This is serious and things can't go on as they are", Mr Gainsford remarked.

Recent comments from the TSI acknowledged that the organisation was not suitably resourced to enforce regulations against door-to-door conmen.
