People in Trading Standards jobs in Northamptonshire have been reassured their positions are not in danger following a leaked paper that proposed a £180,000 funding cut.
The document, which was made public by opposition Liberal Democrat councillors, stated that money could be saved on Trading Standards investigations into food safety and rogue traders.
But Conservative councillor Andre Gonzalez de Savage has reassured those in Trading Standards jobs with the Northamptonshire Council that their department remains a priority.
"Northamptonshire's Trading Standards service is considered to be one of the best in the country and we want to keep it that way," he told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.
"We're certainly not planning to cut the service in half or put anybody at risk."
A full meeting of the county council to decide this year's budget is to take place later this month.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the government is setting up a new Trading Standards taskforce specialising in tackling online crime.
