Officials working in
jobs in town planning in the north-east of England have been warned that jobs could be lost if they give the green light to a development in Darlington.
Brendan Boyle, a planning officer with Darlington Borough Council, pointed out that if proposals for an expansion at a town centre supermarket get the go-ahead, shopping facilities elsewhere could be damaged.
"The net impact to employment in the borough is likely to be negative not positive," he was quoted as saying by the Advertiser.
Mr Boyle also pointed out to others working in
town planning jobs in the area that the supermarket's expansion "would delay or deter the regeneration of the town centre at Commercial Street".
Sainsbury's claims that 120 jobs will be created if the plans to build a new mezzanine floor and a two-storey car park are given the green light.
This comes shortly after Ireland's Alliance Party, stated that it is unhappy with the Planning Appeals Commission for giving permission for a drive-through KFC to be built in Belfast.
