Professionals in town planning jobs with Allerdale Council are likely to be in charge of considering whether a housing development goes ahead in Cockermouth.
A screening option request has been submitted to the local authority to build 221 houses in the Cumbrian town, with around a quarter of them designated as affordable homes, reports the Times and Star.
It is planned that the development will be built on seven hectares of land north of the A66.
Bob Slack, a director at developer Lakeland Leisure, which has jointly submitted the application alongside planning consultants MJN Associates, said: "I decided to take on this development because there is a shortage of affordable homes in Cockermouth and a strong demand for housing in the area."
Earlier this week, officials in town planning jobs in Wokingham declared their opposition to building new flats in an area of the town.
They said the proposals would have disturbed rare birds living in the area, reported the Wokingham Times.
