Officers with jobs in town planning could be required to build new homes after it was suggested that the housing stock in the UK needs a boost.
According to Steve Turner from the Home Builders Federation, there is a "huge undersupply of housing at the moment" in Britain.
He stated that it is a "matter of urgency" to help increase housing delivery, in order to help people find suitable properties.
"We estimate that we have already got a housing shortfall of a million and, [for] every year that we are not building 200,000 plus homes, that million shortfall is getting bigger," Mr Turner remarked.
His comments come after house builder Persimmon reported last week that it had achieved pre-tax profits of £101.4 million for its new build properties during the first-half of 2010.
When compared with the pre-tax earnings achieved during the same period in 2009 (£9.8 million), it suggests that there is a greater demand for new-build houses.
This is likely to lead to more people taking up town planning jobs to help fulfil these requirements.
