Town planning jobs 'could be saved by clamping down on tax avoidance'
The government could help save jobs in town planning if it did more to chase up people who get away with not paying taxes.

According to the Trades Union Congress (TUC), making sure multinationals and the super-rich are paying their taxes could help generate funds to offer training grants for potential town planning officers and other skilled workers.

It made its comments after the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) spoke out earlier this week about the government's forthcoming Spending Review.

The CBI advised the coalition to invest in areas that "foster economic growth", such as road, railway and building projects.

It urged it to limit spending in other areas and prioritise funding infrastructure.

However, a TUC spokesman said: "The CBI's vision for a more skilled workforce is hardly likely to materialise if the government cuts back on training grants and employers refuse to stump up to train staff."

Therefore, it advised the coalition to improve its economy by chasing unpaid taxes.
