People with jobs in town planning could see themselves in greater demand after it was reported that England is the second most crowded country in Europe.
According to Owen Hatherley, writing for the Guardian, only Malta suffers from greater problems of overcrowding in the European Union than England.
He stated that the rise in net migration and a drop in outward emigration could have led to the country having a density of 402.1 people per square kilometre and added that one way to tackle the problem is by effective town planning.
The writer stated that areas such as Mayfair and Pimlico are among some of the most populated places in the UK but are not unsightly.
"Architects and planners … spent the 1980s and 90s agitating for tightly packed housing, the use of urban brownfield sites, compact cities, piazzas and public transport - all attempts to manage and make urban density comfortable," Mr Hatherley commented.
Last month, director of external affairs at the Federation of Masters Builds Brian Berry stated that the government should encourage apprentice schemes such as those for town planners.
