An organisation representing professionals has called on the government to take more action to allow those working in the sector to help tackle the issue of climate change.
The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) made the call in reaction to yesterday's (March 24th 2010) Budget from chancellor Alistair Darling.
While welcoming some of his proposals, such as the increases in Small Business Rate Relief and the VAT registration threshold, the RTPI said the chancellor did not make enough firm commitments when to came to sustainable town planning.
Sue Percy, director of professional services at the RTPI, said: "Whilst we continue to support initiatives to secure a sustainable long-term energy supply, it is disappointing that we are promised yet another White Paper ... when tackling climate change is so urgent."
Last week, the RTPI refuted claims made by Bob Neill, the shadow planning minister for the Conservative Party, who had said people in town planning jobs are living in an "ivory tower" and promised that his party will reform the sector if they come to power.
