People with jobs in trading standards in Stoke-on-Trent will be involved in the new scheme to protect residents from doorstop salesmen.
The No Cold Calling Zones have been created to reduce the number of cases of illegal trading and burglary in areas where a large number of older residents live.
It has been set up by the police and trading standards officers in an attempt to protect the public from being victims of rogue salesmen.
Signs will be put up on lamp posts and in home windows to deter doorstop salesmen from approaching properties.
Speaking with BBC News, Stoke-on-Trent City Council's Val Edmonds said: "We give them lots of information about how to deal with people at the door."
"We also give them the ability, if you like, to deal with people at the door safely."
Kirklees Council in Huddersfield has pledged another £500 to putting an extra 50 signs up to make residents more aware of the problem of hawkers and discourage them from selling goods in the area, according to the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.
