A Croydon supermarket and its neighbouring restaurant have been penalised after those in environmental health jobs found an infestation of mice.
Sapna Cash and Carry and Swad Restaurant were collectively fined more than £10,000 and forced to close for several days following a visit from local authorities, who discovered mice droppings and gnawed food packaging in both buildings.
According to the Croydon Guardian, the owners of the two venues have since improved the hygiene of the buildings, but the fines were implemented when the council decided efforts had not gone far enough.
Steve O'Connell, cabinet member for community safety at Croydon Council, said: "Shoppers and diners need to be able to trust that the food they are buying is healthy and uncontaminated. Failing to apply the basic rules as people's lives can be put at risk when standards are allowed to slip."
Staff in environmental health jobs with Barrow Borough Council have recently been working with the Environment Agency to try and determine the cause of a fly infestation at the Sowerby Woods Business Park in the region.
