Preston city centre revamp 'should go ahead'

Preston city centre revamp 'should go ahead'
Town planning jobs in the north-west should be allowed to continue regardless of concerns from neighbouring communities, according to one expert.

Chris Goddard, spokesperson for the Preston Tithebarn Partnership, which is leading the redevelopment of the city centre, claimed that the popularity of the region warrants plans to expand commercial areas.

Speaking to the Lancashire Evening Post, Mr Goddard was responding to opposition to the proposed revamp from businesses in neighbouring Blackburn, which believe the project is too large and will negatively affect surrounding areas.

"It's about proportionate growth of all the centres based on their current role. I don't think growth in Preston should be stopped because Blackpool and Blackburn haven't secured growth in their centres," he explained.

The Royal Town Planning Institute, which represents professionals in town planning jobs, recently criticised a government proposal to scrap regional spatial strategies as part of the Decentralisation and Localism Bill, announced on Tuesday (May 25th 2010).
