People with
jobs in trading standards in Oxford have urged residents to approach telephone calls from unknown sources with caution.
According to the Witney Gazette, council officials have set out to raise awareness of the dangers of trusting unidentified correspondents calling to offer help.
Local people have been advised to ignore notification from a Banbury Road company claiming to work alongside Microsoft in a bid to acquire personal information.
In a number of cases, scammers have been able to gain access to the hard drives of internet users in a bid to discover the bank details of people in the area.
Martin Woodley, officer from Oxfordshire City Council's trading standards division, said: "If you get cold-called in this way, never give out any personal information. Take a couple of details from them, and contact Trading Standards to check it out."
People with
trading standards jobs at the local authority told residents not to trust telephone calls from overseas call centres, which claim to be from the Ministry of Justice.
