Town planning recruitment could take place in Middlewich after a scheme to build a major new supermarket was approved by the local authority.
Radcliffe Developments wants to convert the Boosey's Garden Centre and Middlewich Autos site into a 29,000 sq ft store that could house a branch of Sainsbury's, Morrisons or Asda, the Crewe Chronicle reports.
Chairman of the firm John Radcliffe told Middlewich Town Council's planning committee that he was acting for one of the three retail giants, but could not reveal which one due to a confidentiality agreement.
The council believes a new supermarket will improve competition in the town and help to ensure that shoppers continue to use the local area.
"Much support is needed within Middlewich to assist and improve the current economy," said councillor Keith Bagnall, chairman of the planning committee.
Rosie Anderson, policy and research officer at Community Masters, recently said the government's localism bill will have an impact on people with jobs in town planning.
It contains laws enabling local communities to take ownership of buildings and keep a list of structures that are viewed as important to local people.
