Highland Council trading standards staff warn over insurance scam
Officials with jobs in trading standards in Scotland have issued residents with a warning about an ongoing telephone insurance hoax.

According to the John O'Groat Journal, members of the public have made complaints about phone calls claiming to be from the Ministry of Justice.

Scammers have falsely informed residents they are entitled to reclaim payment protection insurance, a cover provided for people who are unable to repay debts.

David MacKenzie, trading standards team leader, urged community members to be on their guard when dealing with telephone calls.

He added: "Basically, our advice would be if you think it is a scam then put the phone down and report it to a new organisation called Action Fraud."

Action Fraud provides a point of contact for consumers who feel they have fallen victim to a scam or unfair trading.

The organisation, launched by the National Fraud Authority, can be contacted at any time of day.
