The government needs to provide more assistance to apprentices who want jobs in town planning, construction or house building, it has been suggested.
According to Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, there needs to be more done to ensure that workers continue to have skills to meet future demands for construction.
He said: "If the government is serious about increasing housing supply, we have got to ensure that we have got the skills required in the future to do that."
Mr Turner added that there is a "challenging agenda" ahead with regards to the construction industry, noting that will be a greater demand for zero-carbon homes and energy efficient properties.
These, he noted, would "need a skilled workforce".
The expert's comments come after the Cross-industry Construction Apprenticeship Task Force urged the government earlier this week to assist the industry to hire young apprentices in order to avoid a skills gap in the future.
