The government needs to continue with important town planning jobs, according to one expert.
Head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF) Steve Turner said that the government must make sure that the number of new homes expected to be built this year does not fall below 100,000.
He said: "We are urging the government to take steps to make sure it doesn't drop any lower."
Mr Turner added that the outcome will rest on what mortgages will be available over the next few months on new build homes and what the government's town planning policy is likely to be.
He advised the government to take "action now" and get "the planning system working such that it delivers the homes that the government says that it wants to produce".
His comments come after the National Housing Federation reported that 85,000 planned homes have been axed by local authorities.
This, it said, was a result of the government's plans to scrap regional house building targets.
