Restaurants and other food businesses throughout Greater Manchester will be subject to a new inspection system.
The Manchester Evening News notes that authorities across the county are set to assess eateries on their cleanliness and hygiene.
With the ten councils applying for £100,000 in government funding for such a programme, those with environmental health jobs will evaluate each business which prepares or serves food on areas such as risk of contamination, processing and food handling.
Officials will then publish the results of their findings on council websites.
John McCaffery, owner of the Delicious sandwich bar in Bury, told the publication: "The scheme should highlight the businesses which continue to be allowed to trade at a poor level of hygiene."
Meanwhile, Nick Peel of Bolton Council claims that while those with in environmental health do "a tremendous amount of work", such efforts are often not publicised.
"The general public will now get to see that work. This is going to bring it all to the forefront," he states.
Earlier this month, Barking and Dagenham Council revealed its environmental health officers were to remind businesses in the region of their legal responsibilities on admitting guide dogs.
