Officials in environmental health jobs are calling for mp3 players to be used responsibly on public transport.
As part of its initiative for Noise Action Week, Kirklees Council is to advise bus passengers that listening to mp3 players at high volumes can damage hearing.
A spokesman from the council said other bus passengers who do not listen to mp3 players would also benefit if music lovers kept the noise down.
Officials in environmental health jobs will be issuing travellers with the advice in the hope of reducing the annoyance factor for other passengers, while helping mp3 player users to protect their hearing.
Speaking to the Huddersfield Examiner, the spokesman said: "Research has revealed that listening to personal music players at high volumes can cause serious damage to hearing."
The argument from the officials in environmental health jobs is backed up by a recent study conducted at the University of Yale, which found that some mp3 players can be as loud as a jet engine.
