A woman in an environmental health job with Leicester City Council forced the temporary closure of a grocery shop in the city after dead mice were discovered on the premises.
Susan Clement issued the emergency prohibition notice on the Euro Food store last Thursday (April 1st 2010) after finding the deceased creatures, as well as mouse droppings and chewed packaging, reports the Leicester Mercury.
Although the shop reopened two days later when a further inspection by the environmental health officer revealed that improvements had been made, shop owner Kasraw Said has been hit with a court fine of £745.
Magistrates decided Ms Clement and her colleague Claire Douglas had been correct to order the closure after hearing their testimony.
"In the rear storeroom we found a large quantity of out-of-date food on and underneath shelves beside the back door," Ms Clement told the court.
Professionals in environmental health jobs with Preston Council recently ordered the closure of the Sublicious sandwich shop in the Friargate area of the town after discovering poor hygiene standards and the use of out-of-date food on the premises, reported the Lancashire Evening Post.
