Staff in environmental health jobs with Birmingham City Council have launched a crackdown on unsafe curry houses in the city following an employee being injured by an exploding Tandoori oven.
The incident, which occurred at the Chadni Chowks Restaurants and Sweets in Handsworth, left the worker with serious burns to his hands, face and eyes.
An investigation by people with jobs in environmental health found that the oven had not been properly maintained and had a broken ignition system and a gas leak.
As a result the owner has been fined £6,000, reports the Birmingham Mail.
Environmental health officers have since visited 26 other restaurants in Birmingham finding many were not meeting safety standards.
Neil Eustace, the city's public protection chief, said: "The results of our inspection were shocking, only three of the 27 premises inspected were getting an engineer to examine their oven."
Last month, officials with jobs in environmental health in Greater Manchester began a new inspection system designed to crackdown on unhygienic restaurants and food outlets, reported the Manchester Evening News.
