The government needs to give those with jobs in environment and sustainability clarity when it comes to the Green Deal, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has warned.
According to the body, the policy - which will allow homeowners to take out loans to improve the energy efficiency of the properties - will be unable to attract businesses unless the government can make it clearer how the scheme will be financed and promoted.
Dr Neil Bentley, deputy director-general of the CBI, explained: "To ensure the scheme is a success, the government needs to clarify how the Green Deal will be paid for in the early stages to give investors confidence, and make it simple and hassle-free."
A new CBI report, entitled A Real Deal? Making the Green Deal Work, calls for the government to deliver a realistic financial model for potential private investors in the hope of attracting big businesses to the scheme.
According to the Department of Energy and Climate Change, a quarter of the UK's total carbon emissions currently come from the energy used to heat British homes.
