Environment and sustainability news: Councils 'will re-introduce weekly bin days'
Weekly bin collection days could be restored following government funding into environment and sustainability, reports have suggested.

According to the Daily Telegraph, local authorities are set to receive financial incentives to collect household waste on a weekly basis.

Expected to be announced as part of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' (Defra) upcoming review of waste policy, councils could be offered part of a £100 million injection.

With more than 50 per cent of local authorities choosing not to provide weekly bin collections, statistics reveal up to 18 million people have lost out as a result.

A Defra source said: "Restoring weekly bin collections was something that the prime minister has personally said is essential.

''We have now worked out the detail on how this is financially possible."

The Defra review aims to ensure the appropriate resources are being utilised as part of the government's plans to create a zero waste economy.
