A six-month surveillance operation has seen those with environmental health jobs clampdown on an illegal scrap yard in Essex.
Moves by the Environment Agency and Essex Police saw the Rettendon-based site closed down as hundreds of scrap vehicles containing hazardous substances such as oil and brake fluid and unlicensed skips full of waste were found.
Four men were arrested at the industrial estate, as the agency points out that unlawful waste disposal sites often cause harm to the environment and undercut legitimate businesses.
Sarah Chare, head of the Environment Agency's national enforcement team, states: "We managed to shut down hundreds of illegal sites last year and will continue to crack down on unlicensed operators who put the environment at risk."
Those seeking jobs in environmental health may also wish to note that she points out how the organisation works with local authorities, trade associations and the car recycling industry in the fight against illegal operators.
Earlier this month, the agency revealed details of technology aimed at halting serious waste criminals, which allows for materials buried underground to be monitored.
