Eco-town's future 'under review', people in town planning jobs told
People in town planning jobs in Bicester have been told they must wait to see if a proposed eco-town will go ahead in the area.

A 5,000-home sustainable development was announced for the Oxfordshire region last summer as part of the then-Labour government's strategy for creating a zero-carbon Britain, but funding for it has now been put under review.

Although a £9.6 million fund was allocated for the eco-town in February 2010, cutbacks imposed by the new coalition government mean the £2 million to £4 million needed to complete it may not be available.

District and county councillor Catherine Fulljames commented: "If the government scraps eco-towns it could throw into doubt development on north-west Bicester."

An announcement about the future of the eco-town is expected in the next few weeks.

Earlier this month, law expert Martin Sales told the Scotsman that people in town planning jobs need government support, as they are an important force in assisting the economic recovery.
