Dedicated companies making attempts to improve environment and sustainability targets could enjoy economic growth as a result, an expert has claimed.
Martin Sandbrook, director of education programmes at the Schumacher Institute, has urged businesses to make changes in a bid to reduce carbon emissions.
His comments come after the Carbon Trust revealed that 45 per cent of consumers would shun firms that do not use eco-friendly methods to reduce their environmental impact.
Mr Sandbrook recommended simple, cost-effective steps to sustainability for businesses that may be struggling in the current economic climate.
He added: "Many companies have found it quite easy to cut ten or 15 per cent off their carbon footprint ... and have also managed to save money by doing that quite easily."
As part of the Carbon Trust's Raising the Bar report, the organisation also revealed only 59 per cent of businesses had outlined strategies to improve their energy-efficiency.
