Canvey town centre could be regenerated if a
town planning job is given the green light by landowners.
Senior planners hope to create 400 new homes and abolish the current one-way driving system as part of the development, the Echo reports.
The proposals, put forward by the Castle Point Regeneration Partnership, aim to pay particular attention to the Knightswick Road area of the town.
Residents have expressed doubt over the development due to the £100 million cost and the slow-moving pace of the project.
However, the partnership has planned to take part in negotiations with more than 60 local landowners to secure sites for new shops and facilities.
Castle Point Council's head of planning Steve Rogers told the newspaper: "Some landowners are supportive of our proposals, others are less keen.
"In some cases, it may take discussions about compulsory purchase before we can make any progress."
Meanwhile, the Royal Town Planning Institute will hold a meeting where Scottish politicians will be questioned about their plans for the future of town planning as part of the election campaign.
The conference will take place in Edinburgh on April 27th.
