Know the environmental health job market

Briefly, here’s what you will be tasked with in each case:

Environmental health jobs. Food safety.

As you’d expect, you will be inspecting premises to check compliance with food safety and food hygiene legislation handling complaints about food safety, investigating cases of food poisoning and generally helping to ensure that new businesses adhere to statutory requirements.

Environmental health jobs. Health and safety enforcement.

Your primary role will be to ensure that working conditions are safe. You will be inspecting premises to check compliance with the health and safety at work legislation. You will also look into complaints about unsafe conditions and accident investigation, and may provide advice and training.

Environmental health jobs.  Environmental protection and pollution.

When you work in environmental protection and pollution, you’ll be advising on areas such as general public health issues to include noise nuisance, drainage, smoke , odour and refuse  matters as well licensing and planning permission issues. You may also give recommendations on commercial developments and outdoor events, usually with a focus on noise pollution.

Environmental health jobs. Private sector housing.

In private sector housing you’ll be concerned with the enforcement of housing legislation.  This is likely to include investigating complaints  regarding poor housing conditions  covering  fire regulations, heating, room size and facilities available using  HHSRS  ( Housing & Health Safety Rating System). The work will also  incorporate licensing of HMOs (

Houses in Multiple Occupation) and  offering advice to landlords about grants  in accordance with  relevant qualifying criteria. You will also respond to tenants private housing residential problems in areas such as drainage and vermin.

How to get ahead in your environmental health job

If you’re to succeed in your search for the right environmental health job, it’s extremely important to keep up-to-date with developments in the industry. Which means undertaking appropriate training and CPD (continuing professional development).
